fOOTBALL’S TOUGHEST OPPONENT
The impact of climate change on football in Brazil
THE FUTURE OF BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL IS AT RISK DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
WE’RE IN EXTRA TIME IN THE MATCH OF OUR LIVES AGAINST OUR BIGGEST RIVAL: CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE DESTRUCTION OF NATURE.
From international football clubs to grassroot teams, the game we love is under threat. Our new report, Football’s Toughest Opponent, highlights the risk posed to Brazilian football by climate change:
85% of the clubs in Brazil’s Série A are at high risk from severe climate-related impacts over the next 10 years.
45% are based in cities with a high risk of flooding, while all Série A clubs are based in cities with a considerable risk of wildfires.
Last year alone, clubs from Série A faced financial losses of more than R$100 million (approx. $17.6 million USD) due to extreme weather events.
Without nature, there’s no football.
But there’s still time for an epic comeback. In the run up to COP 30 in Brazil in 2025, fans, players, clubs and governments across the world can unite against our biggest rival and get behind the team that matters most of all.
The Don’t Drop The Ball report knowingly shares its title with a Sky Sports documentary exploring the same issue within the UK and European club space. This documentary can be explored here. © Sky Sports
